WHY RECLAIM THERAPY?

Patient’s get better when they can join a therapist to successfully face what they previously avoided. But did you know that due to unseen anxiety and avoidance mechanisms many patients never declare an internal problem to work on in therapy? Because therapists aren’t taught or trained how to address these hidden mechanisms, many therapies go off the rails in the first session and never get on track. Even long term therapies can be aimless and unproductive. As a result of problems like these, many therapists burn out and leave clinical practice before they’re ready. Additionally, too many patients drop out of prematurely (between 20 and 50%).

In this training we will address these issues head on. Come learn essential clinical skills most therapists don’t get in grad school. We’ll discover how to help your patients identify and declare an internal problem to work on in therapy in the first session, how to address common ways patient’s unknowingly avoid describing the problems they want help with (and how to help them refocus), how to identify and regulate anxiety that rises in the patient’s body when they come to get help from therapists, and how to help patient’s become aware of and differentiate between unconscious feelings, unconscious anxiety, and unconscious avoidance mechanisms (defenses).

WHAT TO EXPECT

Experiential learning. Up to eight participants will work together through a series of carefully designed skill building exercises developed by renowned author, teacher, and therapist Jon Frederickson. Participants will pair off and take turns working through scripted role-play exercises, wherein one person plays a “patient” while the other plays “therapist.” Dr. Paulus will offer mini-lectures/didactic learning and Q and A, and integration time will be included throughout. At the end of the training day we will have a process time for thoughts, feelings, and reactions to the learning experience. Depending on the needs of the group, Dr. Paulus may illustrate concepts and interventions from the training using clinical video.
